Az Annihilator kanadai thrash metal-legendát 1984-ben alapította Jeff Waters gitáros, aki egy másik legenda szerint 13 évesen már klasszikus gitár leckéket adott. John Bates énekessel felvették a sokatmondó Annihilator címû dalt, és a következõ két évben megírták az elsõ két album törzsanyagát, néhány zenésszel kiegészülve. Waters alkalmatlansága társaságok összetartására már ekkor megmutatkozott, két év alatt három dobost használt el, a késõbbiekben több mint húsz ember fordult meg a klasszikus ötfõs felállásban mûködõ zenekarnál. Az elsõ doboscsere kis híján végzetesnek bizonyult, a '85-ös évben Richard "Death" érkezése után nyomban feloszlottak. Az alapítónak ez nem szegte kedvét, szülei házának pincéjében egyedül rögzítette a Phantasmagoria demót, ami Európában az underground metál szcéna kis kedvence lett. 1987-ben készített még egy demófelvételt, majd Vancouverbe költözött és új társakkal újjáalakította a bandát, ezzel kezdetét vette a spirális komplex riffelés nagy korszaka.'89-ben megjelent az Alice In Hell, '90-ben a Never, Neverland, az elsõ két album, amivel lerakták stílusuk alapköveit, ami mélyen a '80-as években gyökerezõ thrash rifforgia. A két lemez meglehetõsen nagy sikert aratott, Dave Mustaine még '89-ben elhívta Waterst a Megadethbe játszani, amit visszautasított, és úgy tûnt, a Metallica áttörésével megnyíló ajtón az Annihilator is besétál a mainstream dicsfénybe. Ennek jegyében készült el '93-ban az elõdeinél melodikusabb Set The World On Fire, de addigra grunge kellett a nagyérdemûnek, az Annihilator így elkerülte a befutást. A zenekar folyamatos turnézással masszív rajongóbázist épített ki magának, és innen kezdve már csak nekik, a komoly metalistáknak készít lemezeket.Furcsa dolog az Annihilatorrõl többes számban, mint zenekarról beszélni, ugyanis Jeff Waters bevallása szerint ez egy szólóprojekt. Õ ír minden zenét, õ hangszerel, õ a producer, és az õ stúdiójában készülnek a felvételek, a King Of The Kill idejében énekelt is, de ha kell, a lemezeken basszusgitározik is.
