Apathia is a largely enclosed entity, and they will likely remain that way for a while due to their nature and the fact that this, their only release to date, was limited to a mere 300 copies. This is a demo release even though it was published by French label Eisiger Mond Productions. Through Depression and Ruins hosts four tracks of four departed, depraved, and depressed black metal. There are no anti-christian themes to be found here, no relentless satanic spewing, no grenades and bullets and certainly no politics. This is music without meaning, negative black metal. The anti-misanthropy, the inward hatred. With this release, the band has become one more scar on the face of the whole, and in the end, they do it just as good as any depressive black metal artist making music today. The project is made up of a trio of Italian musicians and is based out of Rome. Members hail from occult black metallers Tundra (Long Ago Records) and Vmbra Mortis, a project that seems to have been around for a decade but have only recently released their first demo. Much else about Apathia is largely unknown. There is no known year of birth, there are no known causes and the members are rather anonymous, their human names not yet revealed. At least we have the band's photos to accompany the back cover, which should suffice for any curious after hearing the album. Its hard to believe that the suicidal wails heard vocally on Through Depression and Ruins could come from Nefastvm, but they're certainly some of the most tortured heard in the genre to date. The Italians and the French seem to do it better than just about anyone, any cold fan of the genre should already know what to expect with this release. Pure depressions and desolation. This demo is a journey, both literally and theoretically. In the theoretical sense, the listener is sent drifting from start to finish, from a harsh and emotionally wrenching opening to an ending as bleak as the thought patterns of the lyricist in this time of self-destruction. We feel broken ourselves, and can identify with the screams, as we've all been down that lonely path if we've found ourselves enjoying a music this esoteric. In the literal sense, it seems to be a loosely based concept, though the lyrics are unknown. From Lost Memories to the coming of day, the following death and the inevitable tomb, a fitting requiem to the faithfully departed. Apathia walk the edge of comfort. There are bands that are easy to listen to, as abrasive as they are, and then there are those that can mold the genre and hit home with it, taking your breath away. Apathia accomplish this, easily, and its a wonder they haven't been sought out by more labels by now. An excellent debut, with no real shortcomings. Not necessarily flawless, but Through Depression and Ruins certainly falls along those lines!
