Valahogy így festene a Napalm Death zenekar történetének kezdete számokban: 33 perces, 28 dalból álló debütalbumuk elsõ felét 50 fontért rögzítették, majd az 1982-ben alakult trióból két zenész kilépett, három másik belépett, és elkészült a Scum lemez második fele. You Suffer címû szerzeményük pedig bekerült a rekordok könyvébe, a maga 1,316 másodperces hosszával. 1987-ben járunk ekkor.És legyenek a számok, és a tények akármilyen makacs dolgok, ennél sokkal fontosabb, hogy ebben a harminchárom percben és huszonnyolc dalban, ebbõl a néhány fontból, és ebben az évben a metal brutalitásának és a punk intenzitásának összegyúrásából megszületett a grindcore mûfaj, amelyhez az esztendõk folyamán egyáltalán nem maradt hû a ma már alapító-tagok nélkül felálló négyes.A kezdeti, komolyan nehezen vehetõ anarcho-punk csörömpölést akkor váltotta fel a kifinomultnak azért még mindig nem nevezhetõ hangzás, amikor a Killing Joke megszállott rajongója, Justin Broadrick (ex-Godflesh, ma Jesu) csatlakozott gitárosnak a csapathoz. Keze nyomát csak az elsõ korong elsõ fele õrzi, munkáját Bill Steer (késõbb Carcass) fejezte be. Nem csak õ volt azonban új a csapatban, hanem a vokalista Lee Dorian (ma Cathedral) is, valamint a basszusgitáros Shane Embury is. Négyükhöz köthetõ a következõ, From Enslavement to Obliteration korong is, ám a következõ években a csapat kokettálni kezdett a death metallal, ez Lee Doriannek nem volt ínyére, ezért 1990-tõl a Napalm Death énekesét a Mark "Barney" Greenwaynek hívják, aki a Benedictionbõl érkezett, a dobos poszton pedig Danny Herrera váltotta az elektronikus és kísérleti zenék vizére evezõ (és azóta is ott vitorlázó) Mick Harrist. A gyors tempójú politizálást ezután koncertalbumokon, EP-ken, feldolgozáslemezeken, válogatásokon, és vegyes fogadtatású mûveken folytatta a közelmúltban elhunyt Jesse Pintado csatlakozásával öttagúvá avanzsált kvartett.2000-ben, az Enemy of the Music Business lemezzel azonban felhagytak a kísérletezéssel, és visszatértek a nyers grindcore-hoz, amelyet már nem tudtak olyan zabolázatlan formában tálalni, mint a 80-as évek végén, inkább kialakítottak egy sajátos stílust, amelyben a grind, a punk ugyanúgy megtalálható, mint a Celtic Frosttól kölcsönzött lassú õrlések, vagy a SwansThe Gathering énekesnõje, Anneke Van Giersberg, valamint Jamey Jasta a Hatebreedbõl, és a Dead Kennedys korábbi emblematikus frontembere Jello Biafra is.
