Sonata Nocturna is a Spanish band playing dark, romantic, orchestral, classical/neo-classical, gothic metal, with the emphasis on.. well I cant pick anything out, the emphasis is on all those things. It has a rather elaborate, dense structure and a real theatrical flair. At times it sounds quite cinematic, as with the beginning of the second song Hatefull. Beautiful piano passages abound, and the orchestral elements have a huge, grandiose sound. There is no shortage of heavy guitar riffage or power drumming either. There are parts of this that are not too far from what country-mates Ebony Ark do, especially with some progressive-tending tempo changes, although overall its much closer to classical music and gothic in the more traditional sense of the term. Everything comes together to create some really beautiful and haunting melodies which evoke a deep emotional response.



Sonata Nocturna es una banda de reciente creación, surgida entre la joven cantera de músicos granadinos. Sus componentes vienen de formar grupos como Leviathan, Eidolon, Shadowlands, y actualmente, teclista y bajista comparten formación con el proyecto paralelo SOLID AMBER. Este CD-Maqueta es su primera grabación, y se encuentra en fase de promoción. Cuenta con producción propia, al igual que el diseño y la presentación final del CD. Musicalmente, Sonata Nocturna crea un sonido personal, componiendo un Heavy Metal oscuro, con algunos trazos de Doom Metal, y ambientes orquestales que llevan a sus temas influecias como Therion, Lacrimosa, o Nightwish. Aparecen también referencias a unos Paradise Lost de ‘vieja época’, o a los Within Temptation. A partir de estas coincidencias, la diversidad de gustos de sus componentes, abre y enriquece sus mentes, desde un teclista influido por Mike Oldfield, Pink Floyd o Danny Elfman, pasando por los omnipotentes Iron Maiden, Metallica, My Dying Bride, o todos los anteriormente mencionados, (preferidos por el guitarrista) o un bajista llevado por el jazz y los grandes bajistas de la historia, (como mandan los cánones) a una cantante venida del Norte, que siente los fados y la canción asturiana como nadie. La música y la amistad los une a todos. La personalidad del grupo se deja ver en sus composiciones, letras y ambientes, generando una atmósfera oscura y romántica, enfrentando sentimientos como el amor y el odio. “The Darkest Winter” recoge los primeros temas de este grupo, que apuesta por su aparición en un estilo de Heavy Metal poco practicado en este país.



Sonata Nocturna are a band from Granada, Spain, consisting of musicans who have newly emerged onto the music scene. Bands related to this project are Leviathan, Eidolon, Shadowlands, and now the keyboardist and bassist are part of the band SOLID AMBER. The band has independantly released an EP, and is totally self produced down to the design and final presentation of the CD.


Sonata Nocturna creates a sound which is Dark and sorrowful, touching upon the Doom Metal genre. It’s influences include Therion, Lacrimosa and Nightwish. They can also be compared to the older material of Paradise Lost or Within Temptation. This combination results in a diverse genre, opening the mind and enriched by the melodies of a keyboardist who is influenced by Mike Oldfield, Pink Floyd and Danny Elfman and a guitarist who’s idols include Iron Maiden, Metallica, My Dying Bride. The music has hints of jazz undertones and passion is invoked into the tracks by a singer who sings with emotion.


The personality of the group is evident in it’s compositions, lyrics and environments, creating a dark and romantic atmosphere that bears images of love and hate intertwined. “The Darkest Winter” merges these feelings which results in a sound which is quite unique to the Spanish Heavy Metal scene,About Sonata Nocturna.
