A zenekar még a hõskorban, 1983-ban alakult. Középtempós, vészjósló hangulatú death metal-t játszanak a kezdetek óta, számaikat a legválogatottabb gorehorrorok ihletik. Elsõ lemezüket 1987-ben adták ki, majd nem sokkal késõbb fel is oszlottak.
A 90-es évek közepén Phil Anselmo (Pantera, Down) kísérletezõs kedvében feltámasztotta a Necrophagia-t a banda énekesével, Killjoy-jal. A második albumon így már Anselmo gitározik, nem is rosszul. A lemez Lucio Fulci rendezõ munkássága elõtt tiszteleg, aki jobbára belezõs-csonkolós mûveivel vált ismertté. A dalokban el is hangoznak részleteik filmjeibõ, csak úgy, a hangulat miatt, mert a csontok ropogása és a földre hulló belek loccsanása mindig szívet melengetõ hangok.
A zenekar azóta jelentõsen átalakul, Anselmo kiesett, Killjoy azonban fix pont, és rendszeresen jelenteti meg a death metal legpokolibb ágának újabb remekmûveit.
