A zenekar 1975-ben alakult Newcastle-ben John Gallagher és Mark Gallagher által. Szerzõdést kötöttek a Neat Records kiadóval és 1981-ben kiadták elsõ lemezüket a Rock Until You Drop-ot, melyet 1982-ben a Wiped Out követett. Nagy ismeretségre tettek szert e lemezek által. 1983-ban jelent meg harmadik lemezük az All for One, melyet már a Nem Jersey-i Megaforce Records adott ki. Amerikában turnézni kezdtek más Megaforce Records-hoz tartozo zenekarokkal, a Metallica-val és az Anthrax-val.

A Megaforce Records pénzügyi szakértõje, addig turnéztatta õket, amíg egy nagyon bb kiadó fel nem figyelt rájuk. 1984-ben kiadták a Live at the Inferno koncertfelvételüket, amelynek hatására az Athlantic Records-val kötöttek szerzõdést. Emiatt Newcastle-bõl, New York-ba költözött a zenekar.

1985-ben kiadták a Stay Hard címet viselõ lemezüket amihez egy videó is készült. 1986-ban jelent meg a The Pack Is Back címû lemezük. Sok rajongó kezdett eltávolodni a zenekartól az "egyre lágyulóbb zene" miatt. 1987-ben jelent meg a következõ lemez a Life's a Bitch, amely turnéja után Rob "Wacko" Hunter elhagyta a bandát 1988-ban, hogy a családjával lehessen.

Virginian Joe Hasselvander (ex-Pentagram) csatlakozott a bandához dobos poszton 1988-ban, amikor kiadták a Nothing Exceeds Like Excess lemezt. A Grunge elterjedése miatt Európára és Japánra koncentráltak.

2001-ig még négy lemezük jelent meg [Architect of Fear (1991), Glow (1994), Everything Louder (1997), One for All (2000)] amikor a gitárosra, Mark Gallagher-re rádõlt egy fal. A rehabilitáció miatt 2006-ig nem történt semmi a zenekarral, bár hivatalosan nem oszlott fel. 2008-ban egy Brit turnén vettek részt a Lost In Vegas zenekarral, 2009-ben pedig kiadták legfrisseb lemezüket a Walk Through Fire-t.
